Durga Puja also called Durgotsava and Navratri is an annual Hindu and Bengali festival.This festival is celebrated in the worship of Durga,a Hindu Goddess who is a form of Shakti(Power).

As I told you earlier ,Navratri is an annual Hindu and Bengali festival and this festival is celebrated in the worship of Goddess Durga,a symbol of Power(Shkati).Durga Maa exists in all beings in the form of intelligence,mercy and beauty.
The festival is grant occasion where ornamated,life-sized idols of Durga Maa are depicted slaying Mahishasura.In large open places,elaborate pandals made of bamboo and clothes are created to house of the idols.The worshipping goes for five days after which in brilliant procession to a local river or in Ganga river,the idol is immersed so that they make way to their celestial abode.
Now here is the answer Why Durga Puja/Navratri is celebrated? 
It celebrate the victory of Maa Shakti,Durga over the evil demon Mahishasura.So this festival marks the battle of goddess Durga with shape-shifting,deceptive and powerful buffalo demon mahishasura and her emerging victorious.Thus the festival epitomises the victory of Good over Evil.But it is also is in part a harvest festival that marks goddess as the motherly power behind all of life and creation.

When is Durga Puja?

Durga Puja is observed in the Hindu Calendar month of Ashvin and according to English Calendar ie Gregorian Calendar it falls in the month of September or October.This Festival is Celebrated for 10 days,starting from Mahalaya,the day of Sashthi,Saptami,Ashtami,navami and Vijaya Dashami.
In this year ie in 2017,Durga Puja will begins on Wednesday,27 September and ends on Saturday,30 September.
Durga Puja is celebrated all over the India in Assam,Bihar,Manipur,Meghalaya,Jharkhand,Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.But spite of these states,it is famous in West Bengal and Assam since they have a majority of Bengali Hindus residing there.
