What is Ganesh Chaturthi?
Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi.Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day Hindu festival to honour the God Ganesha's birthday.Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated throughout India with great devotion and with great enthusiasm.This day celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesh,the elephant headed son of lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Ganesha is known by 108 different names and is the symbol of arts and sciences and deva of wisdom.He is considered the God of beginnings.He is widely and dearly referred to as Ganapati or Vinayaka.
Ganesh Chaturthi ends after 10-days on Anant Chaturdashi which also known as Ganesh Visarjan day.On Anant Chaturdashi,devotees immerse idol of Lord Ganesh in water after a gala street procession thereafter the clay idol dissolves and Ganesha is believed to return to Mount Kailasha to Parvati and Shiv.
When is Ganesh Chaturthi?
According to Hindu luni-solar calendar,it is believed that Lord Ganesha was born during Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month and according to Gregorian calendar,it falls in the month of August or September.In this year ie in 2017,Ganesh Chaturthi will begin on Friday, 24 August and will ends on Tuesday, 5 September.
It is celebrated throughout India,especially as a public event in the western states of India such as Maharashtra ,Gujarat and Chattisgarth.In other states such as Tamil Nadu,Telangana,Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh,Ganesh Chaturthi is a private home festival where it overlaps with the Teej festival.
